Oil depot plan withdrawn by company in Charvil
A plan to set up an oil depot next to a country park has been withdrawn. Anglers and environmental groups had warned the proposal could have a catastrophic impact on fish and wildfowl in lakes near Twyford, Berkshire. Company Speedy Oils had moved into the site and begun operations before being told to stop by the local council. It then submitted a formal application to convert the former Prince Brothers Garage into an oil distribution depot.
The firm which supplies products, including domestic heating oil, said it needed the site after being told to leave its previous base in Berkshire. But the scheme caused outrage among neighbours of the land on the Old Bath Road. They said fumes from the operation would impact those using a country park just feet away. They also feared its location on the edge of a high risk flood area could see pollution being washed into nearby fishing lakes and agricultural land. Wokingham Borough Council has written to interested parties to say the plans have now been withdrawn. Campaigners say they remain wary a revised application may be submitted to try and get round local objections.
